Amazon is developing a new Warhammer 40,000 animated series based on Deathwatch
The Warhammer 40,000 universe keeps taking firm steps towards new forms of entertainment. After the warm reception of the Space Marines episode in Secret Level, that first foray looks less like a one-off test and more like the start of something much bigger.
Amazon MGM Studios, Blur Studios, and Games Workshop are working on a new animated series set in the grim darkness of the 41st millennium, built around a name that has many fans excited: the Deathwatch, the ultimate hunters of alien threats.

Henry Cavill remains tied to Warhammer’s future
Henry Cavill returns as one of the project’s key figures. In addition to his role as executive producer on the long-awaited live-action Warhammer 40,000 series for Amazon, he will also be involved in this new animated production.
The British actor has shown his passion for the universe created by Games Workshop on several occasions, and his continued involvement remains a positive sign for many fans hoping for a respectful adaptation.
The series will be developed in parallel with the live-action project, expanding the possibilities of exploring different corners of the universe without relying on a single story.
The Deathwatch take centre stage
Although plot details are still being kept under wraps, we already know one of the main elements: the protagonists will be the Deathwatch.
These Space Marines form one of the Imperium’s most specialised forces. They bring together warriors from different Chapters to face the galaxy’s greatest alien threats.
From Tyranids to Necrons and Aeldari, their mission is clear: protect humanity where other armies cannot reach.

A team with animation experience
The project will have Dave Wilson as director and co-creator, the person responsible for the Warhammer 40,000 episode within Secret Level. John Orloff, known for work such as Masters of the Air and Band of Brothers, will also be involved.
In addition, Tim Miller, creator of Secret Level, will serve as executive producer alongside Wilson from Blur Studios.
The presence of Games Workshop ensures the project is developed alongside the original stewards of the universe, something especially important in a franchise with decades of history and a very demanding community.
Warhammer keeps conquering new screens
Amazon’s bet on video game and cult-universe adaptations keeps growing. The success of series such as Fallout has shown that a huge audience is willing to enjoy complex worlds if they receive the right treatment.
For Warhammer 40,000, this expansion could be a historic opportunity. An animated series makes it possible to show impossible battles, alien creatures, and gigantic settings without the same limitations a traditional production would face.
There is still much to discover, but the direction seems clear: the Games Workshop universe wants to stop being solely a hobby phenomenon and become a top-tier audiovisual franchise.

The choice of the Deathwatch seems especially well judged. They are a faction that perfectly combines the essence of Warhammer 40,000: legendary soldiers, extraterrestrial enemies, and an endless war where even the finest warriors know victory is never guaranteed.
After the warm reception of Secret Level, this new series has the chance to prove that Warhammer can work beyond miniatures without losing what makes it unique.
The key now will be keeping the balance: offering spectacle for new viewers while preserving the brutality, scale, and grim identity veterans have been enjoying for decades.
Update 04/08/2026: Henry Cavill has officially confirmed on his social media that development of the Warhammer 40,000 audiovisual universe is continuing to move forward. The actor will continue to star in the live-action series —although he has not yet revealed which character he will portray— has announced the addition of Mike Flanagan as the project’s writer and United Artists as a new production partner. In addition, he has confirmed that he is working alongside Dave Wilson, John Orloff, and Blur Studio on a new season of Secret Level dedicated entirely to Warhammer 40,000, focused on the Deathwatch, stating that all of these projects are being coordinated to build a cohesive shared universe in collaboration with Games Workshop.
